21 Jan A new Talmud Torah opens its doors for the children in Chile
Shavei Israel is proud to announce that one more Latin American Jewish community has an opportunity to give their children a Jewish education and stimulate their interest in our tradition, history and values. A new Talmud Torah run by Rabbanit Esther Miriam Latapiat, whose husband, Rabbi Avraham Latapiat, serves as our emissary in Chile, opened its doors for local kids and offers them a wide range of exciting activities.
Since the latest and most relevant holiday so far was Chanukah, many Talmud Torah projects and events were dedicated to it. For example, a puppet show and special lessons about the miracle of Chanukah were held, children also participated in the workshop where they learnt to make dreidels from the recycled materials.
Talmud Torah activities are not limited to getting ready for the holidays. Children attend lessons about Jewish dietary laws (kashrut) and enjoy listening to the stories about righteous people, such as Abraham and King David. They participate in ceremonies such as ‘separating challah’, and discuss the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Latapiat’s grandson, Moshe Aharon, who, despite his young age, provides great assistance to his family in their mission of spreading Torah and passing their knowledge to the younger generation.
The lessons are held every Sunday, at the same time as lectures for adults, so that parents can safely devote time to their own Torah studies without worrying about their children. In accordance with the initial feedback received, children love the idea, really enjoy studying and playing together, and even remind their parents to bring them to the next lesson. We hope you’ll enjoy these pictures and video we received from Chile.
