Jerusalem premiere of Hidden: The Secret Jews of Spain
Recently, the incredible talented Sharon Katz and Avital Macales, of the Woman’s Performance Community of Jerusalem, presented the premiere of an incredible, and original musical “Hidden: The Secret Jews of Spain” based on “The Family Aguilar” novel by Rabbi Marcus Lehmann and telling a story of Jews of Spain who preferred to stay in the country after the infamous expulsion in the years of the Inquisition and to keep their Jewish identity secret.
The performance took place in the IASA (Israel Arts and Science Academy) Theatre in Jerusalem and was completely sold out. In attendance were some of our own staff members including Chaya Castillo, director of Shavei Israel’s Bnei Anousim department. As an organization that is so involved in the descendants of these hidden Jews throughout the world, the performance was especially poignant and moving, imagining what these people lived through all those centuries ago.
As Shifra C. Penkower, the director of the musical, describes the program, “Both the show itself and the production process have proven to be sources of inspiration and none of us are walking away the same person we were when we began.” We totally understand and fully agree…
