Little known fact about Subbotnik Jews

Recently the Subbotnik Jews of Beit Shemesh gathered together for one of their traditional meetings devoted to learning about the Jewish calendar and the holidays. This event is part of Shavei Israel’s outreach work with the Subbotnik communities in Israel and all over the world.

The event included studying with Rabbi Shlomo Zelig Avrasin, Shavei Israel’s emissary to the community, and a short lecture by interesting speakers: the descendants of the first Subbotnik families that arrived to Eretz Israel before the foundation of the State and helped to build the country!

It is known that this group of Jews came from the Volga district in Southern Russia and was converted to Judaism by Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor of Kovno. Today their great-grandchildren live in the moshav Ilaniya (Sejera) in the Lower Galilee and are eager to learn more about their heritage and the Jewish past of their families in Russia.

We are glad to share with you some pictures of the meeting!
