31 Jul Personal profile: Angel Joselito Lombeida Toledo of Ecuador
We work with many communities around the world and occasionally will profile some of the amazing locals who volunteer as representatives. These generous individuals help us organize our activities in the best way possible, and reach more people in their respective regions. One of these people is Angel Joselito Lombeida Toledo from Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The Beit Toldot community of Guayaquil consists of approximately 10 families who decided to reconnect with their Jewish roots under the supervision of Rabbi Shimon Yehoshua, Shavei Israel’s emissary in Colombia. Bnei Anousim of Guayaquil lead a traditional Jewish life and do their best to keep Torah and commandments, learn Talmud and sacred Jewish texts, celebrate Jewish holidays and strengthen their connection with the land of Israel.
Angel, as one of those people, became interested in Judaism after reading an article about the phenomenon and knowing that his ancestors came from Spain and were, indeed, Jewish descendants. He started to research his roots and managed to convert in Barranquilla together with his family.
Thanks to Shavei Israel’s support, Angel had an opportunity to visit Colombia and study in the Beit Hillel community in Bogotá, where he gained a lot of experience and knowledge. Currently he is working hard to improve Jewish life in his native city and keep his connection with Shavei Israel.
Angel said, “This is the opportunity for Bnei Anousim to return to their roots and reconnect with their heritage through preparation and perseverance in community life.”
