27 Dec Shavei Israel celebrates Hanukah: Manipur, Mizoram and Erode, India
Shavei Israel communities around the world are celebrating Hanukah this week. Here’s a selection of photos from India.
First, let’s visit the Shavei Center in Churachandpur, Manipur, where the children have come wearing their best clothes to light the candles in the Hanukiah.
And a few more…
And the sweetest photos of them all: making sufganiot (traditional Hanuka donuts) in Manipur!
Meanwhile, in the village of Kolasib in the neighboring Indian state of Mizoram, Tuvia Chawngthu, his wife Salina and daughter Shlomit light the candles. They will be receiving the biggest Hanukah present of their lives: they’re on the list to make aliyah along with 100 other Bnei Menashe from Mizoram in the next month. Read more about the upcoming aliyah.
They’re not Bnei Menashe – they’re not even Jewish – but the 1,500 members of the Zion Torah Center community in Erode India know how to get into the Hanukah spirit. That’s community leader Samuel Devasahayam with the microphone. Read more about the Zion Torah Center.
