27 Jun Shavei Israel Profiles: Miquel Segura Aguilo from Mallorca
There are many people without whom Shavei Israel’s activities to reconnect Jews and Jewish descendants to their roots wouldn’t be so effective and successful: these are our representatives and community leaders all over the globe. One of these special people is Miquel Segura Aguilo from Mallorca, a Chueta returned to Judaism, journalist and the Vice President of the Jewish Community of the Balearic Islands. Besides his regular efforts for strengthening, supporting and developing his community he also invested his time and knowledge in preserving its historical heritage, by publishing an exciting book telling the story of the Chuetas.
The presentation of the book called “The Chuetas: An Unfinished Story” took place last week in the synagogue of Palma de Mallorca and attracted more then 60 visitors. Most of them felt a personal connection to the topic: the community of Chuetas kept Jewish traditions in secret for many years and are in an era of ever-increasing interest to study their ancestors’ history. The editor noticed that the modern history of Chuetas is divided into two parts as one can see in the book: the first one is from 1994 to 2003 when Miquel met Michael Freund and got acquainted with Shavei’s activities, and the second one is from 2003 until the present when many people mentioned in this story and the author himself started their formal conversion process and returned to Judaism.
Miquel explained his choice of Shavei Israel as the place of the presentation as follows: without a synagogue, a Jewish community and Judaism nothing that he described in this book and in the previous ones makes sense. He appreciates the role Shavei Israel played in his life and says that for him the organization became the door to return to his heritage and his people.
