Shavei Rabbi educates in Ecuador
Ecuador today has a number of young and developing communities of Bnei Anousim (descendants of those forcibly converted during the Spanish Inquisition), each of them numbering at least a few dozen people eager to learn more about Torah and Jewish tradition, and reconnect with their Jewish heritage. Rabbi Shimon Yehoshua, Shavei’s emissary in Colombia, recently visited some of them and shared with us pictures of life there.
Previously we wrote about the community of Ambato that consists of some 60 people, and their numbers are constantly growing. Renán (Yacov Ben Abraham) Muñoz Palacios, Shavei’s representative in Ambato and the community leader who’s currently studying to become a Rabbi, was among those who welcomed Rabbi Yehoshua to the city.
Another location Rabbi Yehoshua visited time was Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, where a group of some 15 Bnei Anousim decided to join the Ambato community and lead a Jewish style of life. The group participated in a Torah class organized by Rabbi Yehoshua where they focused on the Three Weeks and the upcoming fast day of Tisha B’Av, when we mourn the loss and absence of the Jewish Temple, among other tragedies, and pray for the ultimate redemption.
