Shufersol and Shavei Israel help immigrants welcome the New Year
Recent immigrants to Israel from the Bnei Menashe, Bnei Anousim and Subbotnik Jewish communities have another reason to celebrate this New Year: the Shufersol chain of Israeli supermarkets has donated NIS 50,000 ($13,000) of coupons to the new olim to ease their holiday purchases.
This is the second time Shufersol has gotten involved with communities supported by Shavei Israel; the chain donated the same amount just before this year’s Passover holiday.
The Rosh Hashana coupons are earmarked for 300 of the most needy families. They can be used at any Shufersol store and are intended to make the holiday a bit less burdensome at the cashier. (They can be used at any time of the year as well.) Shavei Israel has been working closely with these families since their aliyah, giving us insight into their earnings and expenses.
The Shufersol program came about through a family connection made by Shavei Israel’s head of the Bnei Anousim and Hidden Jews of Poland departments, Tzivia Kusminsky.
In April, when the program started, we didn’t know if it would be a one time thing or would continue. We are delighted to be working with Shufersol on the second iteration of the supermarket’s charitable outreach and to make the holiday a bit sweeter for our new immigrants.
